Lifestyle or Posed Newborn Session? Which type of session is best for you and your baby?

Newborn photo sessions are the perfect way to honor your newly arrived little, documenting their perfection while they're teeny tiny-they don't stay small for long! Deciding between a posed session and a lifestyle approach can be a challenge! Regardless of your choice, I applaud you for taking the time to create a meaningful visual legacy for them from the moment they arrive. It's an investment you certainly don't want to miss!

Lifestyle newborn sessions are all about raw authenticity and occur in the comfort of your home. Perfect for new big brothers and sisters to feel as if they can be themselves for the session.  Lifestyle sessions are a lovely way to document interaction with your little one, showcase how much you adore them, capture the nursery and add artistic images to your walls. A lifestyle approach focuses on baby in your hands, arms, up close shots of their sweet little fingers, lips and feet. Lifestyle photography leverages natural light and offers a lovely real-life perspective.

The pros of lifestyle newborn photo sessions:

I adore lifestyle sessions. Documenting you and your family in the comfort of your home in natural light is timeless and is endlessly personal. I look for the area in your home that offers the best light and typically aim to shoot in a living room, nursery and/or master bedroom and even capture big brother showing off his room. While lifestyle sessions do capture solo baby shots, this style places emphasis on interaction with family members: baby laying on your shoulder, baby in your arms, baby laying on dad’s chest, baby lying next to older siblings, and even laying next to your dog, etc.

If there are any personal items that you’d like to incorporate into your session, I’d be happy to photograph them but don’t be worried about finding something particular if nothing comes to mind. Timeless lifestyle images are best captured with less ‘stuff’ and I will have a variety of neutral swaddles, headbands and hats to offer during our session.

The best part: I come to YOU! No need to suit up baby and drag them out of  your home. I've photographed babes up to seven weeks new. If in the insanity of welcoming your baby,  the weeks pass quicker than you expected, newborn photos can still be done!

The Cons of Lifestyle newborn photo sessions:

The downside of lifestyle sessions: your home will be photographed and while I'm totally ok capturing a bit of disarray, I find that exhausted moms feel pressured to exert precious time and energy toward tidying up prior to my arrival. Some areas may or may not be clean, but we work around it. This is why booking within your 2nd trimester is important!

If you're seeking posed, solo baby shots with props, a posed newborn session may be just what you're looking for.

Posed newborn sessions are undeniably precious. Your wee-little, sweet, serene and sleepy offers the perfect miracle to design personalized artwork to grace the walls of your home. Posed sessions document your new arrival, their sweet little naked bums in all their newborn glory. Posed sessions take place in my home studio with an intense lighting and prop setup and and capturing just the baby. However, I can also come to your house to photograph just the newborn but equipments and props are very limited.

The pros of posed newborn photo sessions:

The best part: you come to me or I can come to you! You have the perfect excuse to get out of the house of a bit and best of all...No need to spend hours cleaning your home prior to my arrival - we all know what the house looks like with a newborn at home! Save your precious energy for time with your family! Many moms desire the session to focus less on parents, much more on baby. The session will center around achieving solo newborn images. At home parents and siblings can enjoy and sit back, relax and even take a nap of your own if you like. I limit myself to the equipment that I bring, since it's just myself and sometimes my partner that comes along to help me.

The cons of posed newborn photo sessions:

Newborns don't stay small long and these sessions are often booked prior to delivery, completed within the first week of life. Babies are born, by design, with a lovely flexibility which aids in achieving poses. These sessions require a bit more time as baby must be sleeping in order to pose, often up to two and a half hours. While Lifestyle sessions offer immense parent participation, Posed newborn sessions are focused on baby for the session.
